Glossary

Ankylosing spondylitis. Inflammation of the spine, limiting movement

Antisepsis. The process of preventing bacteria from growing.

Bamboo spine. A spine lacking in mobility; it looks like a knotted bamboo in an X-ray.

Brachial neuralgia. Inflammation of the nerves at the shoulder.

Chiropractic. The diagnosis and manipulative treatment of mechanical disorders of the joints, especially of the spinal column.

Cholecystitis. Inflammation of the gall bladder.

Collagenous. Made of collagen, a cementing substance consisting of protein, and present between the cells.

Condyl. The lower end of the thigh bone.

Coronary thrombosis. A blockage of the blood flow caused by a blood clot in a coronary artery.

Enuresis. Loss of control over passing urine.

Epicondyl. Cartilagenous covering over the condyl.

Fascia. Athin sheet of tissue.

Fibrositis. Inflammation of the fibrous tissue.

Foramen. An opening, especially in a bone.

Histamine. A substance secreted in the body, which dilates the blood vessels and is produced more in an allergic reaction.

Hyaline. A thin whitish sheet of tissue.

Hydrostatic pressure. Pressure exerted by water or a fluid on the walls of the containing vessel.

Hypertrophy. The enlargement of an organ or tissue due to an increase in its body cells.

Kyphosis. An excessive outward curvature of the spine, causing hunching of the back.

Lordosis. An inward curvature of the spine, giving the appearance of bending backwards.

Mucosaccarides. A lubricating sustance in the bony joints.

Myocardial infraction. Necrosis or death of the heart muscle due to stoppage of blood supply to it.

Myositis. Inflammation of muscle tissue.

Occipital. The back part of the skull.

Osteomyelitis. Inflammation of the bone.

Osteophytes. Excess bone formation inside a joint.

Prophylaxis. Preventive measures.

Sacro-iliac. Pertaining to the sacrum, the last part of the spine, and ileum, the upper part of the hip bone.

Sclerosis. Scar formation.

Synovial fluid. A lubricating fluid secreted inside a bony joint space.
