Urgent Need To Join Hands For Tobacco Treatment

More than 275 million adults use tobacco in India. (GATS 2010)
Among people over 15 years of age, one third use tobacco products 48% of males and 20% of females in India use tobacco.(GATS 2010)
40 out of every 100 cancer cases in India are tobacco-related. Nearly 95% of all oral cancers occur among tobacco users.(NTCP 2010)
Tobacco kills more people than tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and malaria combined. (WHO,2005)
Each year tobacco use kills about 1 million people in our country. (Jha et al 2008)If current trends continue, tobacco will account for 13% of all deaths by 2020. (Shimkhada 2003) Ø  70 percent of tobacco users want to quit.Ø  Without assistance only 5 percent are able to quit.Ø  Most try to quit on their own, without evidence-based programs; more than 95 percent    relapse.Ø  Using evidence-based programs, can more than double success rates.
