Life style diseases (LD) are slow progressing, long duration associated with lifestyle of a
person. Recent data shows that lifestyle diseases kill more than 36 million people1 and are
responsible for millions of premature deaths every year.
Lifestyle diseases or diseases of longevity or diseases of civilization like hypertension,
diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and overweight or obesity are the primary reason of 30%
mortality globally. With rapid trade, industrialization and westernization of daily life in the past
few decades incidence of these diseases has reached alarming proportion amongst Indian
population in present scenario. Previously microorganisms were the principal agents for the
diseases in human being, but of late worldwide epidemic of life style diseases are on the rise,
research studies shown a high prevalence of hypertension (79.8%), lipid abnormalities (67%) and
overweight/obesity (29.9%) among Indians4. According to WHO, world deaths from life style
diseases will be doubled unless entire efforts are taken to battle the diseases like hypertension,
diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and overweight/obesity etc.
